Get the Sale

I remember the first time I visited France.

The thing I found most amusing was the infactuation many in the Gen X crowd had with American-based clothing labels. They loved Levi’s and Tommy Hilfiger and Starter jackets featuring US-based sports teams.

I wondered why they would so covet our items, when Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world. But in reality, it goes both ways. Americans love international designers too. In fact, I find myself specifically seeking out local designers when I’m in a foreign country, just so I’ll have pieces that none of my friends can readily find.

And that brings me to the theme for today’s blog post. Ebay is a great (and inexpensive) way to spread your international wings.

eBay is in 26 other countries besides the US, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, etc.

If you find that you’ve got a hot seller on one eBay site, why not try auctioning in other countries as well. You might find an even more receptive audience over the river and through the woods.

How do you get around the language barrier?

eLance, a web site where you can find freelancers in a variety of categories, is a great place to locate people who can translate your auction copy from one language to another.  Get as many auctions as you can translated at once to make it economical.

Just be sure to steer clear of those free automated translation services you find online. The ones where you enter your text in one language, and it automatically spits it out in your desired language. Those services are good if you want to read a web site in a different language. But not for the purpose of translating your auction copy. There’s too much room for error.
