All About Publicity

I’m going to make a sweeping assumption here today.

I’m willing to bet that you want all the media attention you can possibly get your creative hands on.

Did I hit the nail on the head? Great! I’m glad we’re on the same page.

Then let me ask you a quick question… is your web site stylist friendly?

What Would a Stylist Do if they landed on your site and wanted some celeb to sport your gear?

Didn’t think about that one did ya?

Most indie designers don’t. And that’s the point of today’s blog post.

Of course you want to be customer friendly by having great product descriptions and photos. But you also have to consider your media audience, as well as fashion stylists who may be browsing your neck of the Internet woods.

Stylists can get your clothes or accessories onto celebrities or into fashion shows or photo shoots. They are essentially hidden (but extremely important, in my opinion) gatekeepers to a larger audience.

A stylist who loves your stuff will get their clients to wear it. One good paparazzi photo of your handbag could catapult your career into the stratosphere.

So your mission for the week — create a special section on your site for visiting stylists. That section should answer the following questions:

  • What types of merchandise you can supply.
  • Turnaround needed to get necessary merchandise to the stylist (e.g.- “I need 10-14 days for custom tee shirts.”)
  • How you want to be contacted - (e.g.- “It’s best to contact me by telephone for the fastest service.”)

And remember, never say “I can’t do it,” to a stylist.  Even if you can’t supply an exact match, make sure you send some goodies in the mail. You never know where your ware’s will land.
